There's just something about old houses, right? They have this intangible curated feel with small details that, together, tell a beautiful story rich with history. But with so many clients building new homes these days, how do we help them bring that same character in charm of decades past into their 2022 home?
Today we're sharing all of our secrets. Whether you're planning a custom build or have purchased a move-in-ready home, these tips will elevate your home and give it a unique and memorable feel.
Add custom trim work: When thoughtfully designed, added trim can tremendously enhance your home, taking it from ordinary to extraordinary in just a few days. Pro tip: Be careful not to overdue it or add trendy patterns that might not appeal to you long term. Choose millwork profiles that complement the architectural style of your home. Here are a few of our favorite examples of trim done well:

2. Replace switch plate covers: This is such a fun and easy fix! We all have to have them, so why not make yours stand out in the best of ways. Details like this may seem insignificant; but they have the ability to have a big impact on a space. We especially love...

3. Paint the Doors and/or Trim: This is a colorful & fun way to add some interest to your home without committing to painting an entire room. It will look best with paneled doors instead of builder grade; so you may want to consider switching those out first. Bonus points for switching out the door hardware as well. We love antiqued brass with that gorgeous patina that develops over time.

4. Upgrade Hardware Throughout: We know this is a daunting (and somewhat expensive) task. So take this one room by room as you are able. The finish will depend on the style of your home and color of your cabinet or doors; but we typically gravitate towards antique brass with a gorgeous patina that develops over time.

5. Replace builder grade mirrors: Or, better yet, ask your builder not to install mirrors and select your own instead. You'll be amazed at the difference. Pro-tip: Start with the powder room. That'll give you more bang for your buck as it's almost always the most frequented.

Of course, a little wallpaper doesn't hurt either :) Head on over to our Wallpaper Superlatives post to see our very favorite paper from each category.
